Temple Chambers was delighted to welcome Professor Paul Craig KC (Hon), FBA, Emeritus Professor of English Law at the University of Oxford, for a talk on 2 November 2026.

Professor Craig delivered an enlightening and highly entertaining presentation, drawing on his book

English Administrative Law from 1550: Continuity and Change

(OUP, 2024), tracing the development of English administrative law over more than four centuries. Challenging the orthodox view that administrative law is a recent creation of the 20th century, Professor Craig illustrated how courts were supervising the exercise of public power, both procedurally and substantively, from the mid-16th century, drawing a straight line from this early case law to modern doctrine.

moderated the session, which ended with a lively Q&A. Questions covered the deep historical roots of principles often thought of as modern, and the part these principles have played in shaping the law.

There was a full house, with guests including members of the judiciary and legal practitioners. Many stayed afterwards for drinks and conversation with Professor Craig. For those he had taught at Oxford, it was a welcome chance to reconnect with their former tutor.

Chambers is enormously grateful to Professor Craig for a fascinating talk, and to our friends and colleagues who joined us, making the evening such a success.
